Air Velocity Calculator
Work out the air speed across a cold room from the fan air flow and the room dimensions, and check it against the recommended velocities.
Room and fan
Result
Fill in the room dimensions and the fan air flow to see the air velocity.

Air velocity across the cross-section

- 0.0 ACH
- Room volume
- 0.00 m³
- Cross-section
- 0.00 m²
This is in the %LOW% - %HIGH% m/s band, typical of %APPLICATION%.
This is below the usual range: under %LOW% m/s air movement is normally too weak for even temperature distribution.
This is above the usual range: over %HIGH% m/s is faster than any tabulated refrigeration application.
This falls between two tabulated bands: faster than %BELOW% but slower than %ABOVE%.
Enter positive numbers for every field to see a result.
Recommended air velocities
| Application | Velocity (m/s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cold rooms (chilled storage) | 0.2 – 0.5 | Uniform temperature distribution |
| Refrigerated display cabinets | 0.5 – 1.0 | Prevents product dry-out and temperature stratification |
| Chilling perishable products | 1.0 – 1.5 | Efficient cooling while preserving product quality |
| Blast freezing | 2.0 – 3.0 | Rapid temperature pull-down, smaller ice crystals |
| Ultra-rapid freezing | 3.0 – 5.0 | Advanced applications needing very fast freezing |
Velocity is the mean air speed over the free cross-section. Obstructions, stacking pattern and evaporator throw all change the speed actually seen at the product.
